Calathea makoyana, commonly known as Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows, is a popular houseplant appreciated for its striking foliage.

Appearance: Have large, oval-shaped leaves with intricate patterns. The upper side of the leaves is dark green with distinct feather-like patterns in shades of silver, white, and pale green. The undersides of the leaves are reddish-purple, adding to the plant’s visual appeal.

Growth Habit: Calathea makoyana grows in a clump-forming manner, with leaves growing directly from the base of the plant. The plant typically reaches a height of about 30 to 60cm and can spread to a similar width. It is relatively compact compared to some other Calathea species.

Lighting Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives in medium to low-light conditions and should be protected from direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Placing it near a north-facing window or providing filtered light is ideal.

Temperature and Humidity: This plant prefers average to warm temperatures between 18-27°C. It appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. To increase humidity, you can place the plant on a tray filled with water or use a humidifier. Misting the leaves regularly can also be beneficial.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels slightly dry. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or become overly soggy. Using filtered or distilled water is recommended to prevent mineral buildup.

Soil and Fertiliser: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and potting soil is commonly used. Fertilise the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted according to the package instructions.

Pruning and Maintenance: Prune to remove any yellowed, damaged, or browned leaves. Regularly remove any debris or fallen leaves from the plant to maintain cleanliness. Wiping the leaves with a damp cloth can help prevent dust accumulation and keep them looking their best.

Calathea makoyana is a visually striking plant with its intricate leaf patterns and vibrant colours. With the right care and conditions, it can add a touch of elegance and tropical charm to your indoor space.
