Davallia Fejeensis 14cm Pot
Common Name: Rabbits Foot Fern
Davallia fejeensis, commonly known as Rabbit’s Foot Fern or Hare’s Foot Fern, is a species of fern native to Fiji and other Pacific islands. It is a popular houseplant known for its unique creeping rhizomes that resemble a rabbit’s foot.
Appearance: Rabbit’s Foot Fern has finely divided, lacy fronds that can grow up to 60 to 90 cm in length. The fronds are a vibrant green colour and have a delicate, airy texture. The most distinctive feature of this fern is its creeping rhizomes covered in light brown or reddish-brown hairs, which resemble the fur of a rabbit’s foot.
Growth habit: The rhizomes of Davallia fejeensis grow horizontally across the surface of the soil or cascade over the edges of containers. The fern produces new fronds from these rhizomes, allowing it to spread and fill its growing space.
Light and temperature: Rabbit’s Foot Fern prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning or evening sunlight, but intense or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided. It thrives in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C and appreciates moderate to high humidity levels.
Watering and humidity: This fern prefers consistently moist but well-draining soil. It is important to avoid overwatering, as soggy conditions can lead to root rot. Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry, and mist the fronds regularly to provide the humidity it enjoys.
Soil and fertilisation: Plant Rabbit’s Foot Fern in a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. It benefits from occasional feeding with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half-strength during the growing season (spring to autumn). However, be careful not to overfertilize, as ferns can be sensitive to excess salts.
Care tips: Regularly remove any brown or damaged fronds to maintain the plant’s appearance. It is also important to periodically trim back the rhizomes if they become too long or unruly.
These Ferns are a visually interesting and relatively low-maintenance houseplant. Their unique rhizomes add an intriguing touch to any indoor space. With proper care and attention to its watering and humidity needs, it can thrive and bring a touch of greenery to your home.
