Hoya Compacta 14cm Pot

Hoya compacta, commonly known as the Hindu rope plant or Krinkle Kurl, is a popular species of the Hoya genus. It is well-loved for its unique, twisted, and waxy foliage.

Appearance: Hoya compacta has thick, waxy, and succulent-like leaves that are tightly packed and twisted along the length of the vine. The leaves are typically dark green, although certain cultivars may have variations in colour, such as variegated or speckled patterns.

Growth Habit: This Hoya species is a vining plant that can trail or climb with support. The vines can grow quite long, making it suitable for hanging baskets or trained to climb a trellis. The leaves tend to grow closely together, creating a dense and compact appearance.

Lighting Requirements: Hoya compacta thrives in bright, indirect light. It prefers a well-lit location, but direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. Place the plant near a window with filtered light or provide artificial light if needed.

Temperature and Humidity: This plant prefers average room temperatures between 15-24°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but should be protected from cold drafts. Hoya compacta appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, so misting the leaves or using a humidifier can be beneficial.

Watering: Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out before watering the plant. It’s important not to overwater, as Hoya compacta is susceptible to root rot. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Adjust the watering frequency based on the plant’s needs and the environmental conditions.

Soil and Fertiliser: Use a well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for succulents or cacti. Adding perlite or orchid bark can improve drainage. Fertilise the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Pruning and Maintenance: Prune Hoya compacta to control its size and shape. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and trim back excessively long vines to maintain a more compact and tidy appearance. Pruning can also stimulate branching and promote fuller growth.

Hoya compacta is a visually striking plant that can add a touch of uniqueness to your indoor space. With its twisted and rope-like foliage, it can serve as a captivating conversation piece. By providing the right care and conditions, you can enjoy its intriguing appearance and potentially be rewarded with its clusters of sweet-scented flowers as well.
