Michaele Fuscata Magnolia 10lt
Common Name: Port Wine Magnolia .

The Michaele Fuscata, also known as the Port Wine Magnolia, is a beautiful and fragrant shrub. It typically has glossy green leaves and produces small, creamy-yellow flowers with a strong scent reminiscent of port wine or ripe bananas. These flowers usually bloom in late spring to early summer.

The Michaele Fuscata would be a good size for both garden beds and larger containers. It prefers a sunny to partly shaded location and well-drained soil. The plant can be pruned to maintain its shape and size, making it a versatile addition to gardens.

Climate & Location

Climate: Michaele Fuscata thrives in warm, temperate climates. It’s well-suited to many parts of South Africa, particularly in areas with mild winters and warm summers.
Location: Choose a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, or a location with dappled sunlight. While it can tolerate full sun, it does best in partial shade, especially in hotter regions.

Soil Requirements

Soil Type: This plant prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). Sandy loam or loamy soil enriched with organic matter is ideal.
Soil Preparation: Before planting, prepare the soil by mixing in compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and nutrient content.

Watering

Watering Needs: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during the first two years after planting to establish a strong root system.
Mulching: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth.

Fertilisation

Feeding: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. An additional feeding in mid-summer can promote healthy growth and flowering.
Organic Options: Using compost or well-rotted manure can also provide necessary nutrients.

Pruning

Timing: Prune after flowering, typically in late summer or early autumn. This allows the plant to focus energy on the next season’s growth.
Method: Light pruning is generally sufficient to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce the next season’s blooms.

Container Growing

Container Size: If you’re growing Michaele Fuscata in a pot, ensure the container is at least 20lt, with good drainage holes.
Care: Container plants may require more frequent watering and feeding. Regularly check the soil moisture and fertilise lightly every 6-8 weeks during the growing season.

Winter Care

Frost Protection: In areas prone to frost, protect the plant by covering it with frost cloth or moving potted plants to a sheltered location. While it can tolerate mild frost, prolonged exposure to cold can damage the plant.
