Cordyline Red Sensation

Cordyline ‘Red Sensation’ is a striking variety of Cordyline australis, known for its dramatic, sword-like leaves in shades of deep burgundy. This plant is well-suited to South African gardens and interiors due to its vibrant color and hardy nature.

Appearance

Foliage: Long, narrow, and pointed leaves that are a deep burgundy to dark red. The leaves can grow up to 90cm in length.
Height: In optimal outdoor conditions, ‘Red Sensation’ can reach up to 3m in height. When grown indoors or in containers, it typically reaches around 1.5-2m.

Care Requirements

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For the best color, provide bright light. It can tolerate some shade but may lose some of its vibrant color in lower light conditions.
Water: Needs regular watering, especially during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it is more drought-tolerant but still benefits from regular watering.
Humidity: While it prefers moderate humidity, it can adapt to lower humidity levels, typical in many parts of South Africa.
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15-27°C. It can tolerate mild frost but should be protected from temperatures below -5°C.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil. A mixture of garden soil with compost or a sandy, loamy soil works well.
Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
