Cordyline Red Star

Cordyline ‘Red Star’ is a striking variety of Cordyline australis, valued for its dramatic, spiky leaves in deep burgundy. This plant is well-suited to South African gardens and interiors, offering a touch of tropical flair and color contrast.

Appearance

Foliage: Long, narrow, and pointed leaves in a deep burgundy to dark red color. The leaves can grow up to 90 centimeters in length.
Height: In optimal outdoor conditions, ‘Red Star’ can reach up to 3m in height. When grown indoors or in containers, it typically reaches around 1.5-2m.

Care Requirements

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For the best foliage color, provide bright light. It can tolerate some shade but may lose vibrancy in lower light conditions.
Water: Needs regular watering, especially during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, it is more drought-tolerant but still benefits from regular watering.
Humidity: While it prefers moderate humidity, it can adapt to lower humidity levels, typical in many parts of South Africa.
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15-27°C. It can tolerate mild frost but should be protected from temperatures below -5°C.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil. A mixture of garden soil with compost or a sandy, loamy soil works well.
Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
