Thai Lime Tree 6lt
Original price was: R300.00.R199.99Current price is: R199.99.Thai Lime Tree 6lt
Thai lime trees, commonly known as Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix), are valued for their aromatic leaves and distinctive fruit, widely used in Southeast Asian cuisine. Growing Thai lime trees in South Africa can be successful with the right care and conditions.
Climate and Soil Requirements
Climate: Thai lime trees thrive in warm, tropical, or subtropical climates. They prefer temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. They can tolerate some cooler conditions but need protection from frost. Suitable regions in South Africa include KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape’s milder coastal areas.
Soil: Thai lime trees prefer well-draining soil. A sandy loam or loamy soil with good organic content is ideal. Ensure the soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (around 5.5 to 7.0).Planting and Care
Planting: Choose a sunny spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball.
Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Watering: Thai lime trees need regular watering, especially during the establishment phase. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice a week, more often in hot, dry periods.
Fertilising: Feed the tree with a balanced citrus fertiliser during the growing season (spring to autumn). Supplement with micronutrients like iron and magnesium if needed.
Pruning: Prune the tree to maintain its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. Pruning after the harvest season is ideal.Harvesting
Leaves: Thai lime leaves can be harvested year-round. Pick mature leaves as needed for culinary use. New leaves are more tender and aromatic.
Fruit: The fruit typically matures in late autumn to winter. Kaffir limes are small, green, and have a bumpy rind. They can be used fresh or dried.Growing in Pots
If you have limited space or live in an area with unsuitable climate conditions, growing Thai limes in pots is a viable option. Use a large pot with good drainage holes and high-quality potting mix. Ensure the tree gets adequate sunlight and is protected from extreme weather.
Tips for Success
Frost Protection: In regions with occasional frost, cover the tree with frost cloth or bring potted trees indoors during cold spells.
Mulching: Mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed competition.
Pollination: Thai lime trees are self-pollinating, but having multiple trees can increase fruit set. -

EvergreenCarissa Macrocarpa, commonly known as Natal Plum or Large Num-Num, is a species of flowering shrub native to South Africa. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family, which also includes other well-known plants like frangipani and oleander. The specific epithet “macrocarpa” refers to its large fruit size.
Appearance: Natal Plum is an evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green, leathery leaves. It can reach a height of about 2 to 3 meters.
Flowers: The plant produces attractive, star-shaped, white flowers that have a sweet fragrance. These flowers are typically around 2.5 cm in diameter and bloom in clusters.
Fruit: One of the distinguishing features of this plant is its large, edible fruit. The fruits are spherical, about the size of a small plum (2-4 cm in diameter), and turn from green to deep red or purplish-black when ripe. The fruit is juicy, with a mildly sweet flavour, and is often used in jams, jellies, and desserts.
Uses: In addition to being grown for its ornamental value due to its attractive flowers and glossy foliage, Natal Plum is also cultivated for its fruit. The fruit is a popular ingredient in traditional South African cuisine and is used to make preserves and alcoholic beverages.
Growing conditions: Natal Plum prefers warm, subtropical to tropical climates and is well-suited to coastal areas. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and requires well-draining soil. It can tolerate periods of drought once established, making it relatively low-maintenance.
