Feed MonthlyChlorophytum variegatum, commonly known as Variegated Spider Plant or Variegated Airplane Plant, is a popular and easy-to-care-for houseplant. It is well-known for its attractive variegated foliage and cascading growth habit.
Appearance: Chlorophytum variegatum has long, arching leaves that are typically green with creamy-white or yellow stripes along the edges. The variegation pattern can vary between individual plants, with some having broader stripes and others having narrower ones. The leaves are narrow and strap-like in shape, giving the plant a graceful appearance.
Size: Chlorophytum variegatum is a medium-sized plant that typically reaches a height of about 20 to 30cm and spreads outwards with its cascading growth habit.
Growth Habit: They are a clump-forming plant with offsets, or “pups,” that emerge from the base of the plant. These pups can be easily separated and propagated to create new plants. The plant sends out long, arching stems with clusters of leaves that cascade down, creating a graceful and trailing effect.
Lighting Requirements: Thrive in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but prefers a well-lit spot. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight for extended periods, as it can scorch the leaves. Placing the plant near a north-facing or east-facing window can provide suitable lighting.
Temperature and Humidity: This plant prefers average to warm temperatures between 15-24°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but should be protected from drafts and temperature extremes. Chlorophytum variegatum adapts well to normal room humidity levels but appreciates higher humidity if possible.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Ensure proper drainage in the pot to prevent standing water.
Soil and Fertiliser: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and potting soil is commonly used. Fertilise the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted according to the package instructions.
Pruning and Maintenance: Prune to remove any yellowed, damaged, or spent leaves. This helps to keep the plant looking neat and promotes new growth. Spider plants are relatively low-maintenance, but occasional grooming and removal of browning leaves can enhance their appearance.

EvergreenDodonaea viscosa Purpurea, commonly known as Purple Hop Bush, is a cultivar of the Dodonaea viscosa plant native to South Africa. It is a shrub that belongs to the Sapindaceae family and is known for its attractive purple foliage.
Appearance: Purple Hop Bush is a compact evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 2-3 meters and spreads about the same width. Its most distinctive feature is its purple or burgundy-coloured leaves, which provide an eye-catching contrast in the landscape.
Foliage: The foliage consists of small, lance-shaped leaves that are arranged alternately along the stems. The leaves are typically a dark purple colour, although the intensity can vary depending on factors such as light exposure and temperature.
Flowers: Inconspicuous flowers are produced on Purple Hop Bush, and they are generally small and greenish-yellow in colour. The flowers are not the main ornamental feature of this plant; rather, it is primarily grown for its attractive foliage.
Growth Requirements: Purple Hop Bush thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively drought-tolerant and can adapt to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It is also known to be quite resilient and can withstand harsh conditions, including coastal areas with salt spray.
Uses: Dodonaea viscosa Purpurea is commonly used in landscaping as an ornamental shrub. Its striking purple foliage adds colour and visual interest to gardens, borders, and hedges. It can also be pruned and shaped to create formal or informal hedges. Additionally, Purple Hop Bush is known to attract birds and butterflies, making it a popular choice for wildlife gardens.
Propagation: This cultivar can be propagated through seeds or cuttings. Seeds can be sown directly into the ground or started indoors and transplanted later. Softwood cuttings taken in spring or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer have a good chance of rooting successfully.
